Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin is looking forward to watching Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel go up against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. Thanos may have decimated the Avengers, not to mention wiping out half the life in the universe with a snap of his fingers, in Avengers: Infinity War, but fans are anticipating that he’ll meet his match when Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel joins the fray in Endgame.

Of course, Carol Danvers only just arrived in the MCU earlier this month with her standalone origin film, in which the Kree warrior learned her true origins as an Earthling and ultimately took on her full powers as the superhero Captain Marvel. With over $770 million in worldwide box office grosses so far, Captain Marvel has continued the incredible run of success for Marvel Studios and Disney as they unspool Phase 3 of the MCU, with Endgame set to wrap up what Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige is now calling the Infinity Saga. It’s expected to be an epic battle when the remaining Avengers team with Captain Marvel, and whoever else they can find to join their cause, to put an end to Thanos once and for all.

No stranger to epic battles himself, A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin says he too is looking forward to Carol Danvers squaring off against Thanos in the final chapter of the Infinity Saga. Posting on his website “Not a Blog,” Martin talked about being a “very old” Marvel fanboy, saying he was saddened that they dropped the original Captain Marvel, the male character Mar-Vell, from the continuity (though a re-imagined version of the character was featured in Captain Marvel as portrayed by Annette Bening). He then went on to praise the movie for what it did pull off, saying:

Martin also urges fans to stay through the credits of Captain Marvel to view all the movie’s Easter eggs, including the one at the very end featuring Captain Marvel’s companion Goose. Clearly, Martin is a huge fan of Marvel, as he previously revealed when he posted a fan letter he actually sent to Stan Lee and Jack Kirby way back in the 1960s. According to Martin, the response he received from Lee was life-changing and helped spur him toward his own career as a fantasy author.

Considered just on its own terms, the movie is hugely entertaining. I look forward to seeing how the Marvel teams uses the captain in the forthcoming Avengers movie. Once she comes fully into her powers, she is far and away the most powerful character in the MCU. She could eat Iron Man for lunch and have Thor for dessert, with a side of Dr. Strange. Thanos is in trouble now.

Martin may himself be an accomplished writer who with his A Song of Ice and Fire books created one of the most compelling fantasy universes in fiction, but as he proves again here, he’s also still just a big fanboy at heart. No doubt, Martin will be one of the first in line to see Captain Marvel pit her powers against Thanos in the epic Avengers: Endgame.
