If the Ghost of Tsushima E3 2018 trailer wasn’t convincing enough, SIE Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida had nothing but praise for the visuals in Sucker Punch’s samurai action title. It’s been over a year since PlayStation fans last saw Ghost of Tsushima but the trailer that was shown at Sony’s E3 2018 showcase left a lasting impression. The game recreates feudal Japan during the first Mongol invasion in 1274.
The story will follow a samurai named Jin. In the gameplay reveal trailer, fans got a glimpse at some beautiful visuals as well as some satisfying samurai combat. The trailer was relatively lengthy at nearly nine minutes but so much of Ghost of Tsushima still remains a mystery. Sucker Punch’s last title, Infamous Second Son, came out in 2014 and remains one of the best looking games of this console generation. While Ghost of Tsushima has been in development for some time, the game has no concrete release date leading some to believe that it’ll either be on PS5 or a cross-generation title.
In an interview with Famitsu, translated by The PlayStation Brahs, it appears that Yoshida was totally overwhelmed by the graphics when he was able to go hands-on with the game. Based on his description it sounds like players will have a lot of opportunities to take in the scenery of Japan that’s beautifully recreated in this period of history. Sucker Punch hasn’t revealed how open Ghost of Tsushima’s world will be; however, in the aforementioned trailer Jin can be seen riding around an open field on horseback.
The visuals in Ghost of Tsushima can be accredited somewhat to its PS4 exclusivity. Much of Sony’s first-party titles tend to be a lot prettier than third-party games as they can take full advantage of the PS4 hardware. If Ghost of Tsushima ends up releasing on both PS4 and the unannounced PS5, it likely won’t affect the game’s visuals or gameplay much at all.
Ghost of Tsushima definitely looks like a next-gen title. Imagining what the game could look and run like on the PS5’s impressive specs is mind-boggling. With the power of a new SSD, the game should experience faster load times and even better visuals when paired with the new internals. While Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima may still be a ways away, PS4 owners can look forward to both Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding and Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II before the console generation’s over.
