Ghost Recon: Breakpoint will release later this year on October 4, 2019, for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Ubisoft announced Ghost Recon: Breakpoint earlier today, revealing the sequel to the popular Ghost Recon: Wildlands while also demonstrating some of the new features fans can expect to be present in the second crack at an open world Ghost Recon game.

The Ghost Recon: Breakpoint release date puts the game at around five months away, with more information likely to come during Ubisoft’s E3 2019 presentation. For those unfamiliar with the series, Ghost Recon: Wildlands was the first to try open world gameplay, blending the stealth and tactical mindset that was omnipresent in every Ghost Recon game with more freedom for the player to explore the game’s setting of Bolivia. While there were some hiccups, Ghost Recon: Wildlands was largely successful, and provided a solid foundation to build upon, which Ubisoft did with aplomb, releasing 19 different content updates for the game over the past few years. The last update included Jon Bernthal as Cole D. Walker, who will shockingly return in Breakpoint as the game’s villain.

According to Ubisoft’s unveiling of the game, the Ghost Recon: Breakpoint release date will take place in early fall, perhaps to bolster the company’s games lineup heading into the 2019 holiday season. The sequel will be on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, remaining noticeably absent for Nintendo Switch, though that’s hardly a surprise, given that Wildlands also never made the jump to the hybrid console.

With so much time in between now and the Ghost Recon: Breakpoint release date, there’s a lot of opportunity for Ubisoft to generate hype for its upcoming open world survival shooter. To the company’s credit, the reveal of the game did a pretty good job of that already, with players getting a taste of the many new features coming to the series in Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. There’s also an interesting narrative brewing around the use of AI, and Ubisoft has used what the company learned from its last open world attempt to create a better, smoother Ghost Recon experience.

The Ghost Recon: Breakpoint release date is set, and Ubisoft has finally pulled back the curtain on the future of the franchise. From what we’ve experienced in our hands-on demo, the game remains the challenging, tactical shooter its predecessor was with a lot more refinement in its execution. It remains to be seen what the future holds for Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, but between the new elements, returning strengths, and quality narrative centering around an in-demand actor in Jon Bernthal, the future looks bright for the franchise ahead of its October 4 release.
