Sadly for fans of Gabriel Luna’s Ghost Rider, who was introduced in season 4 of Agents of SHIELD, a spinoff Ghost Rider TV show will not be moving forward - as Luna himself has now confirmed. Fans were excited when, in May 2019, Hulu announced a Ghost Rider series starring Luna’s version of the character was in development, but this week we learned that creative differences had led to the show being cancelled.

A network or streaming service deciding not to move ahead with a TV show isn’t necessarily a death sentence, as in some cases the show can be shopped elsewhere and find a new distributor. But while there are TV shows that have been rescued from cancellation this way, like One Day at a Time and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, it looks like Ghost Rider is over before it could even begin.

Gabriel Luna took to Instagram to say farewell to Robbie Reyes a.k.a. Ghost Rider, offering thanks to Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb and comic book writer Felipe Smith, who created the Reyes version of the character. Luna explained that while he had been looking forward to returning as Ghost Rider in his own TV show and was surprised by the news of its demise, he understands that it’s “the nature of this business.”

Luna takes the opportunity plug his next big action role as the main villain in Terminator: Dark Fate. He’ll be playing a new kind of Terminator that is capable of separating its liquid metal skin from its skeleton, allowing it to be in two places at once - making him a formidable new opponent for Sarah Connor and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s classic Terminator. The film also introduces Mackenzie Davis as a human-cyborg hybrid. If successful, the movie could prove to be an even bigger launching pad for Luna’s career than his role as Ghost Rider.

In Agents of SHIELD, Robbie Reyes was an auto mechanic who was killed during a gang attack, and begged God to save his brother’s life in the resulting car crash. His wish was granted and his brother was spared, but it came at a price. A former Ghost Rider dragged Robbie from the wreckage of his car, passing on the spirit of vengeance in the process, and from then on Robbie had the ability to transform into a terrifying figure with a flaming skull. Many fans were looking forward to Ghost Rider getting his own TV show, especially since the Nicholas Cage movies have been less than great, so this is disappointing news.

While we can still hold out hope of a reprieve, perhaps by Marvel Studios choosing to bring Ghost Rider to Disney+, it looks like Luna’s version of the character has had his last ride.
