Character breakdowns for Ghostbusters 3 reveal new details on the movie’s young leads. Despite Ghostbusters being one of the most iconic movie brands of all-time, it’s taken over 30 years for Ghostbusters 3 to appear. A large part of this was down to Bill Murray’s unwillingness to return - he didn’t enjoy the experience of making the second film and isn’t a fan of sequels in general. Sony developed a number of scripts for a potential third movie from 2009 to 2014, but reports suggest Murray was so disinterested in the project he failed to read any of the drafts he was sent.
Following the passing of co-star Harold Ramis in 2014, it was decided to reboot the franchise. Paul Feig (Spy) was hired to direct with Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Kristen Wiig playing the new team. Despite plans of a number of sequels and spinoffs, the film failed to meet Sony’s financial expectations and it appeared the franchise was going to take another long hiatus. It came as something a shock when it was announced last month that Jason Reitman was directing a new Ghostbusters and one that would follow the continuity of the original franchise.
Reitman also co-wrote the Ghostbusters 3 screenplay with Monster House director Gil Kenan, and the story follows four young leads - two girls and two boys - as they investigate the secrets of a small town. A new character breakdown for the film has appeared over at HN Entertainment which details the personalities for two of the young leads.
The early description of Ghostbusters 3 makes it sound like it’ll be a creepy kids movie, and there’s still no confirmation of original cast members returning. That said, Dan Aykroyd revealed late last year a Ghostbusters 3 script was being worked on that could reunite the cast, so at the very least, a couple of cameos feel likely. The report wasn’t taken seriously at the time as Aykroyd had a history of prematurely talking up a third movie that never happens. It was recently reported the new film could be ready to shoot by May for a summer 2020 release.
UNNAMED (LEAD BOY 2) To play 12 years old. Slender, pale, dark hair, piercing blue eyes, aquiline features, high cheekbones, withdrawn. He’s prodigious — bright, witty, stubborn, and remains playful in spite of hardship. He is also a brilliantly quick thinker under pressure, is at ease with technology, and has a high facility for problem-solving.
UNNAMED (LEAD GIRL 2): To play 13 years old. Fun-loving, a bit of an airhead. Always curious, haunted, charmed, dazed.
Of course, a big question mark will be the involvement of Murray. His reluctance to commit to previous versions of Ghostbusters 3 became legendary, and while he agreed to make a cameo in Feig’s Ghostbusters as a new character, his swift demise in that entry indicated he wanted nothing further to do with the series. Reports suggest Murray will reteam with Aykroyd for Zombieland: Double Tap, with the two playing versions of themselves. This is especially intriguing, considering Murray already played himself in Zombieland, where he also swiftly died.
