Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters 3 has found two of its leads in Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard and Carrie Coon. Sony’s fun supernatural franchise had long been on hiatus prior to Paul Feig rebooting the property a few years back with an all-female cast. After the movie fell short of box office success, there were no plans for what would come next - until a surprise sequel to the original two films was announced.
The film announcement was followed by a surprise teaser trailer that uncovered the original Ecto-1 Ghostbusters car once more. Ghostbusters 3 will take place in the same universe as the original two films led by Bill Murray, but this time the cast will focus on a group of teenagers. Plot details have been difficult to come by, but the sequel is moving quickly. Sony and Reitman have already made substantial progress so far, and now it appears they’ve found their first two cast members.
A new report from Variety states that Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard and The Leftovers’ Carrie Coon are in talks to join the cast. Coon is reportedly a single mother whose family is at the center of the story, with Wolfhard playing her son. Elsewhere, EW reports that the film is not going to center around teenagers as previously believed, and it will be the entire family (led by Coon and Wolfhard) who lead this next Ghostbusters entry.
This news comes on the heels of reports that Reitman was going to meet with possible leads last weekend for Ghostbusters 3. With Coon as the reported lead, this will potentially be the large movie role she’s yet to get. She has repeatedly impressed on the small screen with The Leftovers, Fargo, and The Sinner, but her film roles have been relatively minor. Coon appeared in Gone Girl, The Post, and Widows, but her biggest role was voice-only as Proxima Midnight in Avengers: Infinity War. If her character’s family is as important to the story as this report indicates, she very well could potentially be the daughter of an original Ghostbuster.
This could also make Wolfhard the grandson of an original Ghostbuster, which is a role that is easy to see him excelling in. He’s already shown in Stranger Things what he could look like in the traditional Ghostbuster attire, but now he’ll get to wear a proper Proton Pack. His stardom from the Netflix hit series should help the movie too, as should his additional breakout comedic role in IT. With the reported summer filming start, it may not be too much longer before we know who else will join Coon and Wolfhard for Ghostbusters 3, but they’re a great start.
