It could be argued that mother/daughter duo Lorelai and Rory Gilmore have both professed their undying love for coffee, but the main characters on Gilmore Girls do date quite a lot over the show’s seven seasons (plus the Netflix revival A Year In The Life). Whether they’re in serious relationships or dealing with a more casual situation (or the subject of a one-sided crush), these Stars Hollow residents have pretty dramatic love lives.
Let’s take a look at the Myers-Briggs® Personality Types of the people that these two characters have dated. Read on to find out the MBTI®s of Lorelai and Rory’s love interests on Gilmore Girls.
Christopher Hayden: INFP
Rory’s father, Christopher Hayden (David Sutcliffe), is pretty immature… but there’s a charming quality to him. That’s probably why Lorelai is always so drawn to him, even when she knows that a real relationship will never work between them.
Christopher sounds like an INFP or “the thoughtful idealist.” He’s the kind of person who never gets very far in his personal or professional life because he wants things to be perfect. He’s always onto “the next big thing” in business and his relationship with Sherry (Mädchen Amick) doesn’t work out. Christopher does become a good dad to Gigi, though, if a super overwhelmed one. INFPs seem “private” and are prone to self-pity when they’re having a tough time.
Tristan Dugray: ENTP
Tristan Dugray (Chad Michael Murray) has a pretty massive crush on Rory during her time at the fancy, pretentious Chilton school. They do kiss in one episode (season one, episode 17 called “The Break-Up Part 2”) and it feels like, if Rory wasn’t still in love with Dean, she would be interested in dating Tristan. He might start off as a jerk, but she can always see the good in people.
Tristan’s MBTI would be ENTP or “the enterprising explorer.” These types like a “lively discussion” and they don’t like “too much of a focus on personal problems.” That is exactly Tristan, who may come from a wealthy family but who doesn’t seem to have much love in his life. He loves teasing Rory, but he definitely needs some hobbies and goals.
Jason Stiles: ESTP
Jason Stiles (or “Digger,” played by Chris Eigeman) and Lorelai have a relationship in season four. He’s funny and kind of weird, which works for Lorelai. It’s either a massive red flag that he wants her to stay in the guest room when she stays over… or a great quirk that makes him interesting.
He clearly does whatever he wants no matter the consequences, like when he actually sues Lorelai’s dad Richard, which makes them split up (as it should). His MBTI would be ESTP or “the energetic problem-solver.” He’s “outgoing” and “good-humored” and “easygoing.” These are great qualities, but he does make some poor choices throughout his relationship with Lorelai.
Max Medina: ESTJ
Who could forget Max Medina? He is Lorelai’s second-biggest love interest on Gilmore Girls (after the charming but gruff diner owner Luke Danes, of course).
As an English teacher, Max has a bit of an introverted personality since he obviously loves reading, but he’s mostly a friendly extrovert, making him an ESTJ or “the efficient organizer.” He teaches a pretty heavy course load at Chilton, and he likes “order and structure.” He’s very respectful of Lorelai and Rory’s close relationship and never wants to overstep.
Paul: ISTJ
Paul (Jack Carpenter) and Rory have a fairly ridiculous relationship in the Netflix revival. She keeps forgetting that he exists, not recalling that she invited him over for dinner, and, in a silly scene, she even leaves Luke’s when he is coming back to join her at their table.
It’s too bad, as Paul is a nice person who seems intelligent. He would be an ISTJ or “the responsible realist.” He takes everything seriously and brings up conversations that he had with Lorelai and Luke, and he seems “motivated” and “objective” like the description says.
Marty: ISFP
Gilmore Girls fans will remember Marty (Wayne Wilcox) as the Yale student who has a huge crush on Rory. Similar to her situation with Tristan, it always feels like Rory is about to say that she likes him, too, but she never does.
Marty is an ISFP or “the versatile supporter.” He would do anything and everything for Rory, and sometimes the scenes featuring him can be pretty awkward as he follows her around like a lost puppy. He’s a sweet person who wants to give other people “practical help,” just like ISFPs.
Dean Forester: ISTP
Dean (Jared Padalecki) is too nice for his own good sometimes. He falls hard for Rory in season one, and it’s impossible for him to stay with her once he realizes that she likes Jess, too.
Dean would be an ISTP or “the logical pragmatist.” He’s cautious and chill, getting Rory a car for her birthday (or, more accurately, building her a car) because he knows that she doesn’t have one, and working at Doose’s Market. He’s “realistic” and a “logical problem solver.”
Jess Mariano: INFJ
Jess Mariano (Milo Ventimiglia) feels like an INFJ or “the insightful visionary.” He’s “creative” and a really talented writer. He’s not one to talk to a lot of people (or even like a lot of people), so it’s a big deal that he’s so drawn to Rory.
INFJs will “withdraw emotionally” if they get overwhelmed, which is definitely something that Jess does. He doesn’t quite have the emotional maturity that Rory deserves in a partner, although fans still want them to end up together (if the show ever gets more Netflix episodes, that is).
Logan Huntzberger: ENTJ
Logan Huntzberger (Matt Czuchry) is Rory’s love interest in the latter seasons of Gilmore Girls and also in the Netflix revival. Thanks to his rich background and the fact that he has always gotten what he wanted, Logan’s MBTI would be ENTJ or “the decisive strategist.”
These types are great with leadership and “take a broad, strategic view of the future.” This is exactly what Logan does when he proposes to Rory, not realizing that she would say no. But it makes sense to him at the time.
Luke Danes: ISFJ
Luke Danes (Scott Patterson) is kind, caring, and so much more emotional and sensitive than his backward baseball cap, plaid shirt, and gruff exterior might suggest.
Luke’s MBTI would be an ISFJ or “the practical helper.” He enjoys serving food and coffee to the residents of Stars Hollow at his diner, and, whether it’s his sister Liz (Kathleen Wilhoite) or Jess, he wants to help. ISFJs are “modest and traditional” which is definitely Luke. It’s hard for him to embrace change, which is why Lorelai is so good for him.
