God of War has always been a series that feels like it would do incredibly well in another entertainment medium, and after the success of Netflix’s The Witcher, why not a television show for Kratos? God of War director Cory Barlog seems to think it’s a good idea. With the success of the video game franchise and the world looking for a show to fill that Game of Thrones hole, God of War could do very well.
There have actually been reports for years that God of War would become a movie franchise, but a movie has never entered development. At one point in time a script was being written by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, but eventually the script changed hands to David Self, who is best known for writing the film Road to Perdition. Other reports emerged suggesting that a film would be directed by Steven S. DeKnight, who was Daredevil’s showrunner in its first season, and the film would feature Dave Bautista as Kratos. At this point a film version of God of War is still so far away from happening that a TV show may be a better fit.
Cory Barlog got on Twitter today to respond to a GamesIndustry tweet discussing which video game franchises deserve their own television show. Barlog obviously stated that his studio’s award winning video game God of War more than deserved the treatment. He went on to clarify that this was not any kind of hint that God of War was being made into a show, but says, “I just believe that games would make great TV shows because you spend so much time with the characters in fantastic worlds.” Fans seemed very excited by Barlog’s response with several stating that they would enjoy seeing a show detailing the entirety of Kratos’ history.
The God of War franchise has been a staple of the video game industry ever since the first game released back in 2005 for the PlayStation 2. The series has focused exclusively on the perpetually angry Spartan Kratos, as he pursues revenge against the Greek Gods who wronged him. As the series progresses Kratos finds himself slaying most of the mythological Greek monsters and then finally practically all of the Greek Pantheon. With the newest God of War game Kratos has moved onto the world of the Norse Gods in order to begin his life anew and raise his young son peacefully. Obviously this doesn’t last long and Kratos returns to his murderous roots.
