In just a few short weeks, Legendary will release a new version of King Kong with Kong: Skull Island. The movie will serve as the second installment in their Monsterverse set to include the Eighth Wonder of the World and Godzilla. The latter has already scored with a successful solo movie, and from the look of Skull Island’s marketing, Warner Bros. is eager to connect the two franchises. In fact, reports have surfaced that Kong’s solo movie will feature a post-credit scene teasing the return of Godzilla in Godzilla: King of Monsters.
Despite currently having a 2019 release date, pre-production is ramping up on the Godzilla sequel with Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown being cast in the lead role. Now, it appears as though the studio has found the right actor to play her father.
As reported by Variety, Bloodline star Kyle Chandler has joined the case of Godzilla 2 as Brown’s dad. How exactly both characters become central figures in a movie sure to feature plenty of monster fights remains to be seen, but the film now boasts a talented cast of newcomers joined by returning cast member Ken Watanabe. To date, Watanabe is the only actor from Gareth Edwards’ monster reboot to be returning, leaving a question mark on the presence of both Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen in the sequel.
Chandler’s star power has continued to rise since his days on Friday Night Lights. Outside of Bloodline, he has stayed popular in theaters with Oscar-nominated films like Wolf of Wall Street and this year’s Manchester by the Sea.
With zero plot details for what writer/director Michael Dougherty has planned regarding Godzilla 2, it becomes a question of how important a role Chandler will have in the film. Hopefully, the sequel does not do away with the character early on as the first film did with Bryan Cranston’s character.
Chandler’s casting aside, it would not be surprising for the series to move on from the story of the Brody family and not bring Taylor-Johnson and Olsen back. Watanabe on the other hand is all for the continued help of Godzilla moving forward and with his character being one of the few that truly stood out, his return will be welcome. The question now is what will the King of Monsters face that will be deserving of Watanabe telling everyone to “Let them fight.”
