One of the Titans confirmed to exist in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Leviathan, is connected to two legendary creatures. Much like several other Titans in the MonsterVerse, Leviathan has never made an on-screen appearance, but he did play a small part in the novelization.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters reveals the existence of 17 Titans in the MonsterVerse, but only nine of them actually show themselves. Four of the Titans - Godzilla, King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra - are at the center of the action. All four are classic Toho kaiju, and a fifth MonsterVerse Titan, King Kong, is an American pop culture icon who debuted in 1933. The rest of the Titans, are original to the MonsterVerse. Though none of them take part in the monster battles, all of the Titans are woken up from hibernation by Ghidorah’s call. Some of these Titans, such as Scylla and Methuselah, are present at the conclusion of Godzilla’s victory over Ghidorah, while others are missing from the movie.
Among the movie’s missing Titans is Leviathan (Titanus Leviathan), a monster whose name was seen on one of the computer screens at Monarch’s base. Leviathan is being monitored at Outpost 49 in Loch Ness, Scotland. And if his location isn’t already a dead giveaway of his true identity, the novelization of King of the Monsters makes it even clearer by confirming that he travels through the water. It’s stated that Leviathan can travel the oceans by entering through the Hollow Earth tunnels underneath Loch Ness. According to MonsterVerse lore, occasional sightings of Leviathan are what led to the folklore legend of the Loch Ness Monster.
Leviathan inspired the story of the long-necked reptilian creature who was supposedly first spotted in 1933 Scotland, but his name suggests a second connection to a much older beast. In the Bible, Leviathan is a sea serpent mentioned by Job in the Old Testament. He’s appeared in various other ancient religious texts as well, sometimes referred to as a dragon, or as a large creature that resembles a crocodile. Leviathan has also been called a counterpart to another Biblical beast, Behemoth, as both are said to be immensely powerful animals. One, Behemoth, is supreme on land, while Leviathan is the king of the seas.
It’s interesting to note that like Leviathan, Behemoth also exists in the MonsterVerse. Behemoth is one of the five Titans who bowed down to Godzilla at the end of the movie. It’s possible that Leviathan and Behemoth have a history of some kind in the MonsterVerse - and perhaps it’s one that we’ll find out about in future movies.
