Amhuluk is one of the Titans confirmed to exist in the MonsterVerse in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but he has yet to make an appearance. Who he is and what he looks like is open to speculation, but his name’s mythological connections could provide some solid clues.

The beginning of Godzilla: King of the Monsters revealed that the MonsterVerse is populated by at least 17 Titans, five of which being monsters owned by outside properties. The rest are original to the MonsterVerse. Four of the 17 Titans – Godzilla, King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan – are central to the movie’s story, and four more make brief appearances. The movie introduces audiences to Biblical Titan Behemoth, a terror from Greek mythology, Scylla, a third M.U.T.O., and the Mountain Titan, Methuselah. The other Titans awakened by King Ghidorah’s call didn’t arrive to see Godzilla defeat Ghidorah at the end of the movie, so they haven’t been officially revealed.

However, even if they haven’t been seen yet, their names aren’t a secret: these Titans were shown on one of Monarch’s monitors. Among them is Amhuluk, a creature who has a Monarch outpost built around him at the Manpupuner rock formations in Russia. Aside from his location, nothing has been confirmed about the MonsterVerse’s Amhuluk, but he does share his name with a creature from the mythology of the Kalapuya tribes, a Native American people from western Oregon. The Kalapuya believed Amhuluk to be a powerful monster who dwelled in a lake near Forked Mountain in Oregon.

Supposedly, Amhuluk was an evil creature who enjoyed drowning anyone and anything in the vicinity. He was the subject of stories used to scare children away from the water. He was said to be a four-legged, spotted sea serpent who sported a giant pair of horns that were useful for impaling his victims. While the MonsterVerse version may not match this description, this at least paints a picture of what Amhuluk could look like.

If Amhuluk lived in Oregon, what was he doing in Russia at the time of Godzilla: King of the Monsters? It’s possible that Amhuluk moved on from Oregon at some point in his life and settled down to hibernate in Russia. If so, this could connect him with creatures from mythology associated with that region, such as a Slavic dragon, especially since Amhuluk does closely resemble the Western definition of a dragon. Slavic folklore is filled with dragons, and some do dwell in the water. It’s worth wondering if Amhuluk really is a dragon, and if he, unlike King Ghidorah, is actually native to Earth.
