One of the secret Monarch outposts on Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ viral website, Monarch Sciences, was revealed in the movie’s latest promo. Last summer, Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment officially began their marketing campaign for Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which is finally hitting theaters five years after Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla reboot released in 2014 - and it also comes two years after the release of Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island prequel movie.
Coinciding with the release of the first Godzilla: King of the Monsters trailer, WB and Legendary launched the Monarch Sciences website to kick off the movie’s viral marketing. In addition to tracking Godzilla’s movements as he patrols the Pacific Rim, people can peruse through files on three of the MonsterVerse’s new Titans - Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah - as well as check out locations for other potential Titans. Those locations are known as Monarch outposts, but they’re all locked to users. However, it seems one of those secret outposts was unveiled in a new promo.
Airing during the 2019 NBA All-Star game, a new Godzilla: King of the Monsters TV spot revealed an upcoming battle between Rodan and Ghidorah, while also providing viewers with brief looks at two of the MonsterVerse’s new Titans - one coming out of the ground at an oil plant and another emerging from underneath a mountain. Viewers can get a better glimpse of the mountain monster through video footage in the new promo, and at the bottom of that tape is a marking, stating, “Monarch Outpost 67. Munich, Germany.”
Looking at the Monarch Sciences website, there is an undisclosed outpost located around Munich, Germany, so it seems that was the original location for whatever Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ mountain Titan was. At the moment, it’s widely believed that that monster is Anguirus, thanks to the creature’s spiky shell. However, the quick glimpse at the monster in the latest TV spot may suggest otherwise. It may be some time before that Titan’s identity is revealed to the general public, but in the meantime, at least fans now know that there are at least 67 Monarch outposts. Before, the highest number that was revealed was 61, which is the outpost for Mothra’s in the Yunnan Rainforest in China.
Furthermore, knowing that another Monarch outpost was dedicated to studying a new monster, it stands to reason that the rest of them are also located where other Titans have been or are currently hibernating. This opens up several possibilities for future installments in the MonsterVerse. Of course, some outposts have been easy to deduce in the past, such as the one in the southern Pacific Ocean, which is presumably the location of Skull Island. But only time will tell how it all comes together.
