Godzilla, one of the most famous creatures in pop culture, now has an official English website from Toho. Godzilla has seen a massive resurgence in recent years, thanks to films like Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla in 2014, and Toho’s Shin Godzilla in 2016.
May is a good month for Godzilla news. The upcoming summer blockbuster, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, is releasing at the end of the month. (Tickets went on sale May 10th.) It’s the first American movie to utilize other monsters in the franchise. King Ghidorah, the famous multi-headed creature and enemy to Godzilla, will be making his American debut. Mothra and Rodan will also be appearing. For some moviegoers, this will be their first time seeing the creatures. But, these monsters have all existed as far back as the 1960s. The Godzilla series is the longest running in film history, beating out franchises like Friday the 13th and even James Bond.
Today, Toho announced their first official English-language Godzilla website. In a press release, Toho highlighted a number of features on the website, including a filmography, exclusive news, and a “Monsterpedia.” The website is live at Godzilla.com, and will be updated on a regular basis. “Fans have been longing for a universe that celebrates the all-mighty king of monsters and Godzilla.com delivers the most exciting news and stories about upcoming events, new merchandise and special releases as we commemorate the 65th anniversary of Godzilla,” said Keiji Ota, Toho’s Chief Godzilla Officer.
Upon visiting the site, fans are greeted with switching logos for various Godzilla movies. (If desired, one can enable the sound effect of the monster’s thundering footsteps.) For the sections, there isn’t much under “News” or “Videos,” but these will be updated as time goes on. The two most substantial areas are the filmography and the Monsterpedia. The filmography contains a comprehensive list of every Godzilla film released to date. The Monsterpedia is an online encyclopedia of the various monsters in the Godzilla series. Not only are their detailed summaries, but also film appearances, and little known aspects such as the monsters’ weight and height. The Monsterpedia is incomplete, but it will be updated as well.
Godzilla.com is a big success for fans outside Japan. For the longest time, there were few English resources for the long-running Japanese series. Aside from fan resources such as Wikizilla, and the more comprehensive Toho Kingdom, there didn’t exist an official source for information on the Godzilla universe. The new, official website is a big step, and shows how popular Godzilla is becoming outside Japan. With Godzilla: King of the Monsters already getting positive reactions, the monster’s popularity will likely rise to even greater heights. Although the website just launched, there are some photos and information even longtime fans may have never seen before. This is definitely something to keep under bookmarks.
