The show was written by Gaiman, who also acted as executive producer. It’s incredibly close to the original source material and follows the story of the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley, a pair of unlikely friends. They must work together to prevent the coming of the Antichrist and the beginning of Armageddon.
Throughout the story, we meet many characters with very different personalities. Now their story is over, our minds turn to what’s next. With prophecies, miracles and what many would call magic, playing such a huge part in their journey we can’t help but wonder what the Hogwarts Sorting Hat would make of them all.
Here we’ve put on our best robes to predict if the main Good Omens characters would end up in Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin.
Aziraphale: Hufflepuff
Aziraphale is an angel. He’s also a classic Hufflepuff. One of the house’s main values is justice and seeking justice is what drives Aziraphale in everything he does. He’s also very patient and level-headed (mostly).
His biggest other Hufflepuff virtue is his loyalty, with him remaining steadfastly loyal to Crowley over the years, believing it to be the best course of action in the name of justice.
There’s no other house that Aziraphale could fit into better than the one which gives students no other house wants a chance. Helga Hufflepuff’s inclusivity matches perfectly with Aziraphale’s desire to see the best in everyone, even demons.
Crowley: Slytherin
It’s such a clique to put the demon into Slytherin but realistically it’s by far the best choice for Crowley. With his idea to form an alliance with Aziraphale, allowing them to trade off tasks so they aren’t just constantly following each other around undoing the other’s work, he showed huge amounts of resourcefulness. He also shows cunning and leadership skills.
Crowley is very much the leader of the mission, with him mostly guiding the next steps. He also shows ambition, even if his ambition is to simply to stay on earth for as long as possible.
Then, of course, there’s the simple fact that he used to be an actual snake, the very first snake in fact. Slytherin is the only choice for everyone’s favorite demon.
Adam: Slytherin
Once again putting the Antichrist into Slytherin fits the cliché but once more the traits of the house of the serpent are those which he displays the most. His leadership skills are evident from the beginning, as he leads The Them on all their adventures. He joined the group last but yet quickly established himself as a leader, with no objections. The games they play, often engineered by Adam, also show tremendous resourcefulness.
While we do see some Gryffindor bravery and nerve, especially when he confronts his father, Adam’s Slytherin side is by far the most dominant. His resourcefulness continues to be present, even after his powers are mostly gone, as does his natural ability to lead. These traits define him as a Slytherin whose past is very much grey, much like a certain potions teacher.
Brian: Gryffindor
Brian is difficult to place as he doesn’t outwardly display many obvious house specific traits. However, the most dominant ones he shows glimpses of are bravery, courage, and nerve. Usually looking worse for wear and with a skeptical and cynical outlook on life Brian is not afraid to question things, especially things Adam says. As Dumbledore himself says, “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.”
Speaking up for what you believe and questioning authority are also traits we see in all the Gryffindors in Harry Potter. This type of personality seems to be a common one in the house and it’s what made us place Brian here. To seal the deal he also shows tremendous courage when he faces Pollution.
Wensleydale: Ravenclaw
For Wensleydale, Ravenclaw is the obvious choice due to his scientific mind and his love of learning. Frequently described as “older than his years” he regularly reads about history and science. He is very intelligent, serious and meticulous. While we do not see great creativity, we do see a great desire to seek knowledge.
Wensleydale also displays some wit at times but it’s his logic, intellect, and education that sees him face down Famine by presenting the most well researched, thought out and educated argument you’ve ever seen come from the mouth of an 11-year-old.
Pepper: Gryffindor
Once again Pepper is not an easy placement but our gut feeling is that Gryffindor is the best fit for her. She’s a feisty tomboy with a bit of a temper on her, who has never been afraid to stand up for herself. She has nerves in spades as she never backs down from a confrontation, making her outwardly brave and courageous, even if mostly it’s due to the fact she doesn’t think before she acts.
While this propensity to fight, argue and push back against perceived wrongdoing can seem aggressive, we’ve seen very similar behavior from many other Gryffindors. A large number of them act before they think and many of them have got into fights after taking offense at someone else’s comments. Pepper will be right at home.
Newton Pulsifer: Hufflepuff
Newt is the definition of hard-working. Despite being completely and utterly inept with technology he continues to find, begin and work hard at job after job. The unfortunate part is that everything usually goes wrong very quickly.
Throughout the show we also see him display a great deal of patience in his dealings with Shadwell, as well as loyalty to the cause he’s signed up for. Despite being given some very boring and monotonous tasks he remains loyal and sticks out his job.
He would fit right in at Hogwarts where his hard-working nature would be rewarded and encouraged and a lack of technology would mean fewer of those pesky explosions.
Anathema Device: Ravenclaw
After spending her entire life learning from the book of prophecy, Anathema also shows tremendous intelligence. She not only recalls but also interprets the prophesies. Alongside this she delves into conspiracy theories, frequently seeking to learn everything she can about the upcoming Apocalypse.
She shows some quick thinking and creativity when she manages to pass a stick off as a gun, and her wit is evident in her encounters with Newt. These are also classic Ravenclaw traits which would help her fit in perfectly.
It would be interesting to see how she fared in a divination class, and if she’s inherited Agnes’ gift of prophecy or if she’s only talented in interpretation.
