A Google Home Hub user in the Netherlands reported that their device suddenly began displaying images from unknown locations, showing people in their homes or at work. Xiaomi, the Chinese manufacturer of the device’s camera, said a recent update caused the problem where still images from other devices were shared with strangers.

The Google Home Hub is the centerpiece that allows the user to access every Google Nest device they’ve purchased. Google Nest products include locks, bells, thermostats, cameras, and smoke and CO2 alarms. Google’s Home Hub lets people operate these smart home appliances remotely, but the glitch let Reddit user Dio-V see images from other Google Nest users from all over the world. To save face, Google has placed the blame on Xiaomi, the company they sourced the cameras from. Xiaomi also manufactures televisions, fitness bands, cell phones and power supplies amongst other consumer electronics. The Chinese company’s devices will no longer be integrated with Google’s system until sufficient action has been taken to prevent data leaks. A spokesperson from Xiaomi told the BBC that the issue has since been fixed but will continue to keep the service suspended until there’s no chance of this happening again.
