No one is safe from Thanos and the snap - not even Google, who added a fun Avengers: Infinity War-inspired Easter Egg ahead of the worldwide release of Avengers: Endgame. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is reaching a turning point in Avengers: Endgame, marking the culmination of a narrative that has been building up since 2008 with Jon Favreau’s Iron Man.

This goes back to Avengers: Infinity War, where Thanos finally got the six Infinity Stones and the Infinity Gauntlet, wiping out half the population of the universe with just the snap of his fingers. It was one of the most heartbreaking moments in the history of the MCU so far, with beloved characters like Spider-Man, Groot, and Bucky Barnes vanishing in front of their friends. Thanos’ snap included humans, non-humans, animals, plants, and apparently also information on the web.

According to Mashable, Google didn’t want to be left behind on the Avengers fun and discreetly added an Avengers: Infinity War/Thanos-inspired Easter egg to their search engine. When looking up “Thanos” on either desktop or mobile, Google displays an Infinity Gauntlet on the top right corner of the Thanos information box. After clicking it, some of the search results begin to vanish (very much like the fallen heroes in Avengers: Infinity War), and the number is then cut in half. By clicking the Gauntlet again, the results will come back thanks to the power of the Time Stone.

The way the characters turned to dust has become the source of a number of jokes, memes, and a marketing tool for many brands, with Marvel Studios themselves even adding the dusting effect to their logo at the beginning of the trailers for Avengers: Endgame. It seems as though Marvel doesn’t want fans to forget what happened - not that they could. Avengers: Endgame will see the combined efforts of the surviving heroes as they try to undo Thanos’ actions and defeat him once and for all.

Although heartbreaking for some (especially if their favorite character didn’t survive the snap), this Easter egg is a fun discovery and a very mesmerizing one too. There’s something about watching random search results turn into dust that is oddly satisfying. Things might not be as easy for the characters in Avengers: Endgame as it is in Google, but the time has finally come for audiences to discover how they will bring the rest back.
