Gotham’s final version of Batman won’t be entirely be David Mazouz. Playing the show’s Bruce Wayne for five years now, fans have seen the actor slowly inch his way to become the Caped Crusader that they’re more familiar with. But it turns out, the finale’s iteration of the hero won’t be fully portrayed by him.
Debuting in 2014, Gotham tackles the early days of Jim Gordon in the Gotham City Police Department. They eventually added Bruce’s character as it expanded its narrative to the origin stories of several Batman villains such as Penguin, Riddler and even the Joker. Last year, it was renewed for its fifth and final season composed of 12 episodes - five of which have already aired starting early last month. That means, there are only 7 outings left before the prequel series wraps up. After taking a short one-week break, the show will return with a brand-new episode titled “13 Stitches” next Thursday directed by lead star, Ben Mackenzie. However, while there’s still a lot to look forward to in the program, fans are arguably the most excited about seeing the fully-fledged Caped Crusader before the show bows out.
Now, thanks to Television Critics Association’s 2019 press tour where Gotham had a presentation, information about what to expect on the show’s Batman has surfaced online. Gamespot’s Chris E. Hayner took it to his official Twitter account to share what he’s seen on the panel. Aside from previewing the much-anticipated debut of their Batman, it’s been also revealed that while it’s Mazouz’s face under the cowl, they used an over six-feet-tall body double for the actor who better fits the character’s build int the comics. Showrunner John Stephens has previously teased about Mazouz’ own formal Batsuit that will debut by the end of the series, saying it looks more like Christian Bale’s in The Dark Knight Rises than Ben Affleck’s more recent one from the DCEU. There was no word from the event confirming this, but the tease was more than enough to hype up fans for the remaining episodes of Gotham. An early promo for the show’s final season released last month offered fans a hazy glimpse of the Mazouz’ final look at the Caped Crusader, but the image was steam-obscured so it’s hard to gauge whether or not Stephens’ description was accurate.
It makes sense that Gotham opted to keep Mazouz playing the role instead of getting an older actor to portray the role altogether. This way, fans get a better sense of continuity considering that they’ve watched the actor go through the motions of life in preparation for ultimately becoming the iconic DC character. Depending on how the actor’s scenes as Batman were filmed, chances are that it was more tiring switching from a close-ups to expanded shots. Nevertheless, it’s safe to say that the cast and crew of the series were more than willing to go the extra mile to ensure that the show is wrapped up in the most satisfying way possible.
