One of the reasons why Netflix’s Grace and Frankie is approaching its sixth season is due to its raw honesty and familiarity among different audiences. Grace and Frankie is much more than that ‘show about two husbands who leave their wives for each other.’ It’s a show about age, friendship, change, and family.

A person’s relationship with family members and friends changes with age and Grace and Frankie portrays that beautifully. Before the sixth season hits Netflix this January, let’s take a look at 10 moving moments about aging.

WHEN THEIR KIDS WANTED TO MOVE THEM INTO A HOME

In the fourth season, we see Grace and Frankie’s kids wanting to send them away to a nursing home. Thanks to Frankie’s memory not being like it was and their home falling apart, the kids are worried their moms can’t live by themselves anymore.

If Grace falls again, Frankie isn’t strong enough to lift her up. And if Frankie gets lost while driving, is Grace always going to be able to find her? Both women felt they were far too spry to be in a home but it’s an honest conversation that needs to be had when the moment is right.

WHEN BUD DIDN’T WANT FRANKIE TO DRIVE

Also in the fourth season, we see Frankie happy to have one-on-one time with her only granddaughter Faith. Frankie took Faith for a little ride when she got distracted after following an ice cream truck around. Things went from bad to worse when Frankie finds herself at the Mexican border with a dead phone.

Sadly, when she finally did get ahold of Bud, he was not pleased with the situation. His mother seemed to be losing her mind and almost put his daughter’s life in jeopardy. It was a hard moment for Frankie and for Bud.

BEING IGNORED FOR YOUNGER CUSTOMERS

After Grace and Frankie’s lives were blown up when their husbands left them for each other, the women had no choice but to move into the beach house their families shared. They weren’t great friends at first but after a few weeks, the two really depended on one another.

While the two women were out, they decided the only thing that could cure their pain at that moment was a cigarette. But attempting to buy a box of cigarettes seemed impossible after they were ignored by the clerk who seemed infatuated with a younger customer. The women were incensed and screamed a few slues before stealing the cigarettes and leaving the building.

CROSSING THE ROAD IN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME

In “The Crosswalk,” we find Frankie upset by the amount of time a person is supposed to get across the crosswalk. Seventeen seconds may be enough time for a younger person to make it across the road but it’s not really long enough for someone who’s injured or in their 70’s.

Frankie heads to the DMV to prove her point and get the time extended but it took a lot of guts (and older people) to get her point across.

BRIANA TAKING GRACE’S IMAGE OFF THE SAY GRACE’S BOX BECAUSE SHE’S DATED

As the current CRO of Say Grace, Brianna took over the company so her mother could retire. Brianna is a very business-savvy person who’s good at what she does, including marketing.

Now as the CEO, Brianna decides to change Say Grace’s marketing to appeal to a younger audience. Having her 70-year-old mother’s face on the box wasn’t the direction she wanted the company to go in, and that was a hard pill for her mother, Grace, to swallow.

USING A MOTORIZED SCOOTER

In the episode “The Hinge,” Grace heads to a Home Depot-esque store to fix a hinge in the beach house. With Grace’s hip bothering her, a worker suggests Grace taking a motorized scooter to isle 234 to find the hinge she’s looking for. Instead, Grace has too much pride and makes the haul down the store.

Along the way, Grace steals a scooter and finds her way but she’s mortified by the fact that she needed it in the first place. To make everything worse, Grace rides the scooter out of the store where she crashes into a parked police car!

BREAKING A HIP FOR THE SAKE OF ICE CREAM

It doesn’t matter if you’re 18 or 84, getting injured is scary for anyone. When you get older, it can be scary noticing that your body doesn’t work the way it used to. Going for walks isn’t as easy as it once or your poor bones are more fragile.

For Grace, she was shocked when she slipped in a frozen yogurt shop and broke her hip. She needed a replacement which landed her in the hospital and needing time to rest afterward. It was a moment that brought Grace and Frankie closer and a very real moment for anyone dealing with age’s nasty head.

WAKING UP WITH A BAD BACK

Both Grace and Frankie don’t let their elderly injuries get in their way. They both may have spent an entire day on the floor after pulling too many muscles but they’re not dead! They continue to live their lives and do the things they want to do, ignoring fear (and even death).

When the two women break out of the old folk’s home and back into their old house, they decide to squat until their old home becomes theirs again. However, sleeping on the floor is not comfortable and these two women felt it the next day (and the day after that),

HEART ATTACKS & HEALTH CONCERNS

It was a terrifying moment when Sol came home and saw Robert leaning over unconscious at the dinner table. Robert had a heart attack while writing his wedding vows and if Sol didn’t come home as early as he did, who knows if Robert would be in the series today.

Robert makes a full recovery but he continues to have stress-related issues throughout the series. Sold is terrified of losing his new husband, so he makes sure Robert eats well, drinks less, and takes his medication, much to Robert’s chagrin.

GETTING OLDER AND BECOMING COMFORTABLE WITH SEXUALITY

Had it not been for Frankie and her hippy ideas, Brianna’s business would be in the kitchen sink. Thanks to Frankie’s natural lubricant, she opens helpful ways for women of all ages, but mainly older women.

After realizing how many older women needed a lubricant to feel pleasure while in the bedroom, Grace and Frankie launched a line of vibrators solely designed for older women with joint issues. It was a genius idea that shed light on a real problem for those seeking intimacy.
