Grease’s John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John reunite dressed as their iconic characters from the film. Released in 1978, Paramount struck a high note with the adaptation of the Grease Broadway musical for the big screen. Starring Travolta and Newton-John, Grease - and the soundtrack album - became a global smash hit.

Directed by Randal Kleiser, Grease follows star-crossed lovers Danny Zuko (Travolta) and Sandy Olsson (Newton-John). After a summer fling in 1958, Danny and Sandy separate, only to unexpectedly reunite for a senior term at Rydell High School. Classified as a “greaser”, Danny is flanked by members of the T-Birds and forced to maintain his bad-boy reputation, becoming dismissive of virtuous Sandy. Helmed by sarcastic Rizzio (Stockard Channing), the Pink Ladies adopt Sandy into their group, spicing up the halls of Rydell High. Four decades after its release, Grease continues to be popular. Despite spawning sequels and prequels, the original Grease continues to hold its place as a fan’s favorite.

Travolta and Newton-John doled out a special treat to fans at a recent event by donning their character’s original costumes. Hosting the Meet n’ Grease sing-along, Travolta and Newton-John wore their iconic outfits for the first time since the film wrapped in 1978. Newton-John appeared in Sandy’s yellow cardigan sweater, and the leather jacket and hot pants combo from Grease’s finale. Travolta struck greased lighting, yet again, wearing Danny’s iconic black jeans and a leather jacket. Check out Newton-John’s Instagram post of the famous couple reunited once more:

Newton-John sporting her leather jacket held more significance than mere nostalgia, as the actress recently auctioned off the jacket to raise funds for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research foundation. Paying the price tag of $243,000, the anonymous donor returned the jacket to Newton-John, declaring she will always be the rightful owner. Spanning generations, Grease continues to live on with a Grease prequel film Summer Loving in the works and HBO Max reimagining the musical film into a live-action TV spinoff, titled Grease: Rydell High.

Travolta and Newton-John have had wildly successful careers since those summer nights as Danny and Sandy 40 years ago, however, Grease will always be hailed as one of the highlights of their careers. With several Grease projects in the works, it remains to be seen if Travolta and Newton-John will grace the halls of Rydell High once more. For now, Travolta and Newton-John have given fans of Grease the one that they want by appearing as Sandy and Danny once more.
