Greg Berlanti’s Green Lantern series for HBO Max has finally unveiled the first story details. Warner Bros. is bringing out its own streaming service later this year with the upcoming HBO Max platform. The new service is already in the process of developing several original programs that will debut on it. With Warner Bros. being the home of DC Comics, they’re already working on a number of series based on the popular brand for HBO Max. Berlanti, who has an overall deal with the studio, is no stranger to DC TV as he is the mastermind behind The CW’s Arrowverse and several shows on DC Universe. During WarnerMedia’s big presentation in late 2019, the studio announced that Berlanti was developing two DC shows for the streaming platform with Green Lantern and Strange Adventures.

With the latter being the first anthology series in Berlanti’s DC lineup, Green Lantern marks the producer’s second go with the character. During the announcement, Berlanti couldn’t share much at the time about his new take on the Emerald Knight. This likely had to do with the big moment in the Crisis on Infinite Earths finale that revealed the HBO Max series will exist in the Arrowverse’s new Multiverse. The Winter Press Tour for the Television Critics Association is currently taking place, and HBO Max was there to present new information about the platform and its content.

During the presentation, Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max Head of Original Content, revealed fresh details on the new Green Lantern series. Per Deadline, Aubrey confirmed that it will center around two specific Lanterns on Earth. But the series will also include one of the popular characters from the Green Lantern mythology as Sinestro will have a prominent role. Aubrey didn’t specify whether Sinestro would start out as a Green Lantern or already be on the path towards becoming a Yellow Lantern. She explained, “It’s going to span several decades and focus on two stories about Green Lanterns on Earth [as well as one in space] going into the Sinestro story.”

With the Green Lantern Corps movie still being developed, it remains uncertain if the series would be able to make Hal Jordan and John Stewart the leading Lanterns. Geoff Johns is pulling double duty for the franchise as he is both attached to the film and the new series as a writer. With the comics having focused on several people as the titular character, there are many options for Berlanti to choose from.

HBO Max is expected to launch in May, but no specific premiere date for the series has been set since the initial announcement. Given the large production that a series like Green Lantern would need, it’s possible it could arrive by Q4 of 2020. No details have emerged regarding the current status of the pilot script with casting probably not starting until spring. But with the DC brand being as big as it is for Warner Bros., it’s safe to say that Green Lantern is a big priority for the studio and HBO Max.
