A new Green Lantern TV series is coming exclusively to streaming service HBO Max, but when does it release? This week, WarnerMedia unveiled plans for the upcoming streaming platform, which will launch in May of 2020. Prices were revealed, as well as specifics pertaining to its library of content. HBO Max will be packed with all its existing shows, along with 31 original programs in just its first year. This number will grow to 50 in 2021.
It’s been announced that at least three new live-action DC Comics shows are coming to HBO Max. The three series are Green Lantern, Strange Adventures, and DC Super Hero High. Strange Adventures is an anthology series that includes Adam Strange and consists of close-ended stories involving characters that exist in the DC Universe. DC Super Hero High is a half-hour comedy series about a group of super-powered teenagers at a boarding school for gifted children. The third show, Green Lantern, is set in space. Not much else has been revealed regarding the story or the characters.
Considering that it focuses on one of DC’s most iconic heroes, Green Lantern is the most highly anticipated of the three upcoming shows. Since it was just announced, it’s hard to nail down a specific timeframe for its release, but it seems likely that Green Lantern will launch on HBO Max in late 2020 at the earliest. The streaming service itself doesn’t even release until May, so the show could release either at the end of 2020, or more likely early in 2021, depending on when it enters production.
Being a show based in the cosmic corner of the DC Universe, Green Lantern is sure to be a big-budget series. Greg Berlanti even referred to it as “our biggest DC show ever made”. Since Green Lantern is a key member of the Justice League and one of the most recognizable DC Comics characters, HBO Max is sure to treat it as not only its flagship DC property, but also as one of its biggest original shows. With that in mind, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Green Lantern takes priority over DC Super Hero High and Strange Adventures.
Green Lantern is at such an early stage in development that virtually no details have been made public, aside from a vague description of its setting. Even the name of the protagonist hasn’t been announced. Since several characters in DC Comics have held the mantle of Green Lantern, it could be anyone from Hal Jordan to Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, or even Jessica Cruz. Hopefully, more information on what to expect from the first-ever Green Lantern TV series will be made available soon.
