The classic comedy movie Groundhog Day is receiving an official sequel as a Playstation VR video game. Called Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son , the video game will be a sequel to the 1993 comedy and will be available exclusively on PlayStation VR.
Groundhog Day is a comedy starring Bill Murray as Phil Conners, a weatherman who has to travel to the small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania in order to cover a bizarre public event known as Groundhog Day. Conners is trapped in a time loop that causes him to live the same 24 hours over and over again, which forces him to relive the Groundhog Day festivities repeatedly as he tries to find a way to escape his predicament.
The official PlayStation.Blog website has the announcement for Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son, which will be an exclusive to the PlayStation VR where you will play as the son of Bill Murray’s character from the original film. Phil Conners Jr. grew up in the shadow of his father and shows a great deal of resentment towards him, yet he is now trapped in the same Groundhog Day time loop and has to find out how to escape.
Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son will be a first-person VR game that involves solving puzzles within the same repeating 24-hour time period. The idea is that you will have to find clues and solve mysteries through trial and error by using a mixture of your wits and your knowledge of how the rest of the day is going to play out. The game is being developed by Tequila Works, which is a company best-known for the critically acclaimed puzzle game, The Sexy Brutale. Tequila Works is being assisted by James Siciliano, who works on Rick and Morty, and Joshua Rubin, who used to be a lead writer for Telltale Games and worked on The Walking Dead: Michonne.
The concept of Groundhog Day is already similar to that of a video game, as most games allow the player to repeat the same levels and story over and over again until they win, so it actually makes a lot of sense for the sequel to take the form of a game instead of a movie. There was even a recent game called Minit that involved repeating the same period of time in order to solve puzzles and it was one of the best games of 2018.
There is no word yet on whether any of the cast of Groundhog Day will lend their voices to the game, but it’s not outside of the realm of possibility. It’s well known that Bill Murray doesn’t want any involvement with a third Ghostbusters movie, yet he seemingly had no problem reprising the role of Peter Venkman for Ghostbusters: The Video Game. That may mean he would also be open to providing his voice for a Groundhog Day video game.
