Marvel have released a new Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 TV spot, this one focusing on the mind and temperament of Baby Groot. The tree toddler has been a fan favorite ever since the credits rolled on the Guardians’ first outing, and Marvel have capitalized on that in the marketing for the sequel. They’ve highlighted his newfound cheekiness in almost all of their marketing materials thus far, playing up how ridiculously cool look, although director James Gunn has been keen to point out the de-aged tree isn’t just a marketing ploy.

Yet Marvel aren’t done teasing the youngster’s role in the film. Recent TV spots have increased the scope of the movie, includingthe tension between Gamora and her adoptive sister Nebula, but that doesn’t means they’re not still putting him front and center.

A new tease shows off new footage, pitting Baby Groot’s temper against baby dinosaurs. As in previous trailers, Rocket is forced to scold the impulsive Baby Groot for his actions, yet again highlighting the dynamic duo’s role reversal in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2.

Groot’s temper flared rarely in Guardians Of The Galaxy - he brought the fight when needed,  and that elder version of the character acted very much as the peaceful, moral heart of the group. In very few words he steered a jaded Rocket away from his mercenary background towards something resembling a family. This time around, however, Groot is a rampaging toddler with a penchant for causing trouble - James Gunn called him a “little jerk” - and it’s Rocket who is responsible for his friend’s moral upbringing.

It seems that this scene will precede the battle between the Guardians and the tentacled Abilisk that has appeared heavily in previous trailers and is set to take place early on in the movie. However, director James Gunn has admitted that elements of the Guardians 2 marketing won’t actually appear in the film, so Baby Groot’s battle with the baby dinosaurs may not actually make the cut. The essence of it will remain though, with Rocket continuing to shepherd Baby Groot back towards adulthood through a series of mishaps involving massively destructive weapons, and the little guy losing his temper more often than not.

James Gunn has claimed that Groot is a better-written character this time around, a surprising suggestion given the character’s enormous popularity with fans. The studio executives must be confident of this new take on the earnest superhero of few words to feature him so heavily in marketing materials, but it seems that Baby Groot has already won the fans over, with many expecting Guardians 2 to be one of the best movies of the year.
