Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer/director James Gunn reveals that he and Mark Hamill have yet to properly discuss the prospect of casting the actor in the MCU movie. It’s been a tumultuous time for the filmmaker since he was surprisingly booted out of the project last year, halting the movie altogether. But now that he’s officially back onboard, many fans are wondering what came out of his supposed meeting with the versatile star regarding a potential part in the threequel.
Marvel Studios has yet to officially announce when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters. It was believed that the film will originally roll out next year, but due to snag concerning Gunn’s tenure, the film has been in limbo. Nevertheless, it’s going to happen with the original script and cast of characters - fans will just have to wait a bit for it.
During a Q&A over at his official Instagram account (via Comicbook), a fan asked about the status of his supposed talks with Hamill about the Star Wars actor potentially appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Unfortunately, despite actually meeting and developing an off-work relationship, the director revealed that they haven’t talked about the matter. “Mark is my friend. We have never had these talks you speak of,” he said.
Interestingly, Gunn didn’t reveal anything more about it, particularly on whether or not he still considers bringing Hamill to the MCU via Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Typically, the filmmaker gives a hint about these things to hype up people’s excitement, but there’s no indication whatsoever in his most recent comment with regard to the topic. Regardless of what the director is plotting for the cosmic threequel, most would agree that it’s going to be a missed opportunity not to bring someone like Hamill to the ever-expanding Marvel universe. His versatility would prove to be a perfect fit for the franchise, particularly in the Guardians of the Galaxy series with a plethora of obscure galactic creatures he can bring to life.
Gunn is currently busy directing Warner Bros. and DC’s The Suicide Squad as of the moment - a gig he scored after he exited the MCU for a while. Production is on full swing and only after he finished it can he fully immerse himself in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Perhaps by then, the director has gotten the chance to talk about Hamill about the possibility of him starring in the much-anticipated movie. And since not only are they neighbors, they’re also both under the Disney umbrella, it may not be difficult to pull this off. In the meantime, fans can catch the actor reprising his legendary role as Luke Skywalker (as a Force Ghost perhaps) in J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hitting theaters next month.
