For years, comic book fans everywhere were busy speculating who would end up being Peter Quill/Star-Lord’s father in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Popular names like Adam Warlock were obviously thrown around, but after Kurt Russell was cast in the mysterious role, the actual character only became increasingly more mysterious. Nobody could have seen what writer and director James Gunn had up his sleeve for his character, and it was clear that fans were shocked and surprised by his decision when it was revealed that Star-Lord’s father is none other than Ego the Living Planet, a character so obscure and unique, that it was almost hard to believe at first.
Footage of Russell as the character was briefly shown during Vol. 2’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con last summer, but since then, no official footage or images of Ego from the film have been released. However, this latest bit of news has finally revealed what is, for most fans, the first look at Kurt Russell as Ego the Living Planet.
As with most unexpected blockbuster reveals nowadays too, the news comes through a toy design, as the first images of a reportedly still-unannounced Ego the Living Planet Funko Pop figure were released online. The images themselves come from Funko Pop News, and compared to what was seen of Russell in the SDCC footage, this looks fairly accurate:
Both the Funko Pop figure and the Dorbz figure are, of course, sporting Kurt Russell’s signature mustache and beard for the character, and the costume seems to stay in line with the rest of the Guardians’ outfits. Make sure to take all of this with a grain of salt, as per usual with unofficial announcements and images, since neither Marvel nor anyone involved in the film have announced a figure for Ego yet. With that being said though, these figures look like they make sense based on the character’s design in the film, and look just like the other recently-revealed Vol. 2 Funko Pop figures in both their designs and their packaging.
Even with this reveal, Ego still remains one of the most mysterious aspects of the Guardians sequel. The Vol. 2 SDCC 2016 footage seemed to explain how and why Ego is appearing in a relatively human form when he’s introduced in the film, with the scene in question featuring a hilarious joke between Ego and Drax (Dave Bautista) about some certain, anatomical choices the cosmic being may have made when he was designing his humanoid form. It’s still unclear how much the Guardians sequel will include or show Ego as the planet that comic book fans recognize him the most for being, if only due to the expensive CGI required to do so.
Either way, this was a decision that Guardians of the Galaxy 1 & 2 writer/director James Gunn seems to be willing to hinge the entirety of his highly-anticipated sequel on. So far though, while not much is known about the Ego character in general, it seems his inclusion here will add an interesting and unexpected new layer to Peter Quill’s already-remarkably tragic origin story.
