The Marvel Cinematic Universe began the exploration of its cosmic side in 2014 with Guardians of the Galaxy and expanded to further dimensions last year with Doctor Strange. Given that Phase 3 will reach its highest point with Infinity War and will end with the still untitled fourth Avengers movie, bringing together the Avengers and the Guardians, the second Guardians movie will play a bigger role than the first.
The release date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is fast approaching and many details are still kept under wraps – but probably the biggest mystery of all is about Kurt Russell’s character, Ego (the living planet), Star-Lord’s father. Ego hasn’t been shown in trailers or TV spots, having only appeared in the clip shown at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, but now a pic has surfaced, showing Kurt Russell in full costume.
CBM shared an image taken from a Snapchat story showing Russell in the same costume seen at the Comic-Con footage. His appearance has been previously teased in Funko toys and a Hasbro action figure, and they were not far from the actual look Russell sports in the movie. Let’s not forget this is Ego’s human form – his planet form has not been revealed, neither at conventions or in toy form.

The name is pretty self explanatory: Ego is a planet, with a sentient consciousness and an atmospheric and geological cycle that work akin to the biological functions of an animal. If he needs to speak, his surface topography can be rearranged to resemble a humanoid face. So yes, he can design a humanoid form in order to blend with humans or other species, so it’s believable that he can have a half-terran son like Quill.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will bring back Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Baby Groot as they face new menaces, such as Ayesha (the golden High Priestess and leader of the Sovereign people, played by Elizabeth Debicki). The Guardians will be joined by Nebula, Yondu, and Mantis while also learning more about Star-Lord’s past and family – enter Ego, the Living Planet.
With a new trailer coming up next week, fans are eagerly waiting for the first official look at Ego. Given that the marketing game has already begun, and after the above pic showing Kurt Russell in full costume, let’s hope that Marvel will finally give him a place in the trailer.
