One of Marvel’s most surprisingly successful teams, the Guardians of the Galaxy, return to the big screen this year in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2. This follow up to the smash hit from 2014 will see the introduction of a few new team members, the appearance of Ego The Living Planet, and the return of everyone’s favorite adorable tree-creature, Baby Groot. With only two short months until the film is released in the U.S., everyone is gearing up to welcome Star-Lord back to the MCU.
That includes movie theaters, it seems, especially in countries which will be seeing the film a little earlier than the USA. One cinema has even put out their standee for the film already, and it’s looking very inviting…
Twitter user NRT posted a photo earlier today of what looks like a movie theater lobby with a huge display promoting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Instead of the traditional 2D standee, this display is interactive, with a backdrop featuring the logo, Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Drax (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) standing in front. In addition, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Baby Groot (Vin Diesel), Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Yondu (Michael Rooker) appear, but as dynamic cut-outs that are posed to be sitting/leaning on a sofa. The caption is in Korean, but when run through Google translate, it seems to simply be a comment on the arrangement and characters.

This standee is obviously intended for fans to take a seat on the couch for a photo, a fantastic idea that takes advantage of image-driven social media to continue to build buzz for the movie. Deadpool took a similar approach with their theater standee last year, with a setup that pictured Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) on a chair, and read, “Sit on this.” While it may appear at first that Baby Groot isn’t included in the standee, a small image of the creature is seated on Star-Lord’s shoulder.
We love the way that films are starting to get creative with their marketing concepts, especially when it involves playing into the fans’ love of social media. From behind-the-scenes photos posted on Twitter and Instagram to AMAs on Reddit and cool concepts like this standee, it’s fantastic to see the studios really embracing all the possible ways to connect with their audience.
Of course, this doesn’t tell us anything new about the movie, nor do we know where the photo was taken or if this standee is going to be coming to every theater. Still, this is obviously going to look very different from theater to theater, as we assume that the couch is not provided! Still, we can’t wait to see what other quirky and new ways superhero movies find to catch our attention in the future.
