James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 won’t start filming until after Warner Bros. and DC’s The Suicide Squad is all finished. The latter production is officially underway in Atlanta and is already shaping up to be an exciting venture for the writer/director. The cast is stacked with a variety of famous faces, including returning Suicide Squad actors Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag. A plethora of new faces have also joined the ever-growing cast, including Peter Capaldi, Idris Elba, and even Taika Waititi.
This past year has been a rollercoaster for Gunn. Last July, news broke that the writer/director had been fired by Disney and Marvel Studios after a series of controversial tweets from 2008 and 2009 resurfaced. It wasn’t long after that he booked Warner Bros. and DC’s second film for the Suicide Squad and, in a major turn of events, the Mouse House announced that they had hired him back a few months later. Now, Gunn is happily helming projects from both companies. He’s also made it very clear that The Suicide Squad is his top priority at the moment, and he’s now speaking up about when fans can expect to see more from his other Marvel trilogy-ender, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
In an Instagram post, Gunn shared a thoughtful gift that Marvel sent him on his first day of production on The Suicide Squad. The comic company had chronicled his Guardians journey in a series of photographs that were collected and put in a scrapbook. Alongside that, Marvel had also wished Gunn good luck on his upcoming production. Throughout the comments section, many questions were asked about his upcoming DC project, and Instagram user matthew_kircher asked, “are you filming Suicide Squad then going to do Guardians 3 afterwards?” Gunn responded by saying he, “won’t start Vol 3 until after Squad is finished editing, not filming.”
Gunn, along with DC producer Peter Safran, have already made it clear that the writer/director does not plan on rushing The Suicide Squad, but his comment adds a little more insight as to when exactly he’s planning on starting production for Guardians. As for right now, Gunn has exclaimed that Guardians’ script is close to being finished, but his brother, Sean, has shared that he will probably take another look at it before it’s finalized.
It’s reassuring to know that Gunn is taking his time on these respective productions. Both DC and Marvel fans are hoping for the best from each of these films, and he is patiently hearing them out. The gift that he received from Marvel is also a perfect example that there’s really no rivalry between their company and DC. Gunn has even shared that he’s a fan of both comic book companies and that he finds a lot of enjoyment in each of them. So, even though it’s a long way out, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will surely be worth the wait. And in the meantime, fans can look forward to his iteration of The Suicide Squad first, which is set to be released in 2021.
