There have been rumors of Disney swapping out some of their longest-running amusement park rides at Disneyland and DisneyWorld for new films or characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe for several years now. Unsurprisingly too, amongst their many exciting announcements at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con Panel, in which they showed footage and/or concept art from all of their immediate upcoming films, Marvel confirmed that Disney was going to be replacing The Twilight Zone-themed Tower of Terror at Disneyland California Adventure Park, with a new Guardians of the Galaxy-themed ride.
The news of the ride - titled Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT and focusing on the Guardians themselves fighting to break out from the glass case prisons that they’ve been trapped in - was met with mixed responses from fans, between those who were excited to experience the new ride, and those who wanted Tower of Terror to stay the way that it was originally created. But either way, progress on the ride is officially underway.
For those who have been to California Adventure Park any time within the past few weeks, they would have seen the ride’s iconic sign covered with tarp and construction equipment as Disney began work to switch out the ride for the new Guardians ride. Thanks to a new video from Inside the Magic as well, fans can now see that Tower of Terror has officially been closed down, with a new sign pinned up out around the ride teasing the new ride. The sign itself is laced with the kind of humor that helped to make the original Guardians of the Galaxy film so much fun in the first place, but there’s no doubt a sense of sadness from longtime Disney fans at the news, since Tower of Terror has emerged as one of the most beloved and unique rides in all of the Disney Parks. At the same time, the ride’s premise, which involves Rocket Raccoon working with his fellow Guardians to break out from the Tanaleer Tivan’s (The Collector) collection, after he tricked them into being trapped in some of his many displays, sounds like the kind of zany and fun experience that could make Mission: BREAKOUT its own, wholly unique thing.
With Star Wars Land on its way right now too, this is likely just one of the many changes and updates that Disney fans can expect to see in the coming years to the amusement parks, as the company works to better integrate all of their many properties into each of the parks. Considering that Disney owns not only all of their own films, but also Pixar, Lucasfilm, and Marvel, the opportunities for other rides to be changed or added to the existing parks is practically endless at this point also, and Mission: BREAKOUT is probably just the beginning.
