Vin Diesel promises more sides of Groot that fans haven’t seen before in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. The Fate of the Furious star was one of many scene-stealers in Guardians of the Galaxy as the voice of the humanoid tree-like figure, who with the single repeated phrase, “I am Groot,” captured fans’ hearts and brought plenty of laughs. Diesel reprises his role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, this time as Baby Groot.

The sequel’s iteration of Groot is certainly a departure from the first movie’s version of the character, who sacrificed himself to save the heroes only to be reborn and slowly grow back. Although Baby Groot is quite different from the character seen in the first Guardians of the Galaxy, it still may not be the last time fans get to see a different version of the character. Diesel is promising a big future for Groot, who, he said in a new interview, has not yet even been fully grown on screen.

Speaking to USA Today, Diesel describes the Groot seen in the original Guardians of the Galaxy as a college kid, while Baby Groot is, well, a baby. But he is teasing the prospects of Groot as a grown “man” in potential future appearances, which may or may not include a spinoff starring Groot and his sidekick Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper). Here’s how he described the potential future of Groot:

“The first Groot we saw was a freshman in college. This [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2] Groot is in nursery school. Wait ’til we see the full-fledged working-man Groot. Wait ’til we see GROOT!”

When USA Today asked Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 writer/director James Gunn about the possibility of a Groot spinoff, he exclaimed, “I don’t know where he comes up with these things!” Diesel has spoken about the potential for a Rocket and Groot spinoff before, claiming that Gunn wanted to make one after the release of Avengers: Infinity War. He’s also talked before about Groot battling The Hulk at some point in the MCU. Diesel is nothing if not persistent, and considering the popularity of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and the Rocket & Groot duo, it wouldn’t be shocking if he got his way.

Of course, it remains to be seen how the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy will meet in Infinity War. It’s unclear whether the Groot depicted in any future MCU movies will be the “full-fledged working-man” Groot that Diesel is promising. But the character has proven popular enough that he and Rocket may well get a spinoff not long after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, regardless of Groot’s age.
