Guardians of the Galaxy has gone from a relatively obscure Marvel property to a very popular one, with the 2014 live-action Guardians of the Galaxy film to thank for bringing the space-traveling crew - including, Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Groot and Drax the Destroyer - to mainstream audiences. Now in a new collaboration with Telltale Games, the franchise will be available for play to gamers for the first time this Spring on consoles, PC and mobile devices.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series is that game, described as “a brand new story of the universe’s unlikeliest heroes: Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot. In the wake of an epic battle, the Guardians discover an artefact of unspeakable power. Each of them has a reason to desire this relic, as does a ruthless enemy who is the last of her kind, and who will stop at nothing to tear it from their hands.”

Now a brand new selection of images has been revealed ahead of the game’s first episode, along with the announcement of voice cast members. Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights, The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series), Emily O’Brien (The Young and the Restless, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor), Nolan North (Pretty Little Liars, Uncharted), Brandon Paul Eells (Watch Dogs) and Adam Harrington (The Wolf Among Us, League of Legends) have all been confirmed to voice Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket, Drax and Groot respectively.

It’s interesting to note that the villain in this series will be a female character, with the threat in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 also being a woman (Ayesha and the Ravagers). Whether Ayesha is crossing over into the Telltale game is still being kept under wraps, but there are plenty of female Marvel villains out there that could step into the role of the ‘Big Bad’, taking this story in an entirely different direction. While Telltale are saying gamers will play as Star-Lord, they’ve been known to allow flexibility in this regard, with players taking on a number of characters in their recent Game of Thrones series.

The pictures released today showcase the traditional comic book-esque art style that have become a staple of the various Telltale titles. It’s great to see the characters mocked up in this way and it will certainly be interesting to see exactly how flexible their journeys will be when the game eventually rolls around.

There’s always the chance however that the game could be somewhat of a disappointment. Telltale titles in the past have been a little hit-and-miss when it comes to gaining commercial success, so for something as popular as Guardians, we hope they’ll have pulled out all the stops to ensure this is a riveting and groundbreaking adventure.
