The days of Gwen Stacy being known only for her love affair with Peter Parker – and subsequent death in Spider-Man’s arms – are nearly over. Marvel Comics has announced Gwen will be getting her very own comic book origin story, beginning in February 2020.
News of Gwen Stacy #1 will be more welcome than ever before, after the recent launch of Mary Jane Watson’s own comic series. But where Amazing Mary Jane sends Spider-Man’s second greatest love off to Hollywood, leaving Peter to fight crime on his own, Gwen Stacy will be giving an origin centered on its heroine, as opposed to her ill-fated love story. A novel idea, especially considering the talent assembled for the five-issue miniseries.
Soon after the news broke, writer Christos Gage (Amazing Spider-Man) took to Twitter to share his own excitement, while also teasing his story with artist Todd Nauck would be “Veronica Mars meets Lee/Ditko ASM, and it’s MY NEW BEST FRIEND. Do not miss it!” That’s a solid combination likely to pique the curiosity of both new and veteran comic book fans, while the official plot synopsis does some teasing of its own. As mentioned above, it seems the main goal is giving Gwen a life of her own long before her star crossed Spider-Man’s. But don’t expect a mundane origin, with Marvel teasing Harry and Norman Osborn, Crimemaster, the Kingpin of Crime Wilson Fisk, Jean DeWolff, Yuri Watanabe, and yes, Peter Parker (possibly only in his guise as the spectacular Spider-Man).
More details are certain to be offered ahead of this new chapter in Spider-Man mythology, but for now fans can tide themselves over with the cover art by Adam Hughes. The official solicitation details and plot synopsis can also be found below.
