Actress Gwendoline Christie says goodbye to Game of Thrones with an extensive social media post. On Instagram, she expressed her thanks for the opportunity to portray the character Brienne of Tarth, and she also referenced her Game of Thrones collaborators.

Prior to Game of Thrones, Christie portrayed “Classy Shopper 2” in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, along with “The Operator” in a teaser video for the BBC series Seven Ages of Britain. The English actress’ career forever changed when she was cast in Game of Thrones as Brienne of Tarth, a prominent franchise character that first appeared in George R.R. Martin’s 1998 novel A Clash of Kings, the second chapter of the fantasy series known as A Song of Ice and Fire. Christie made her Game of Thrones series debut in the season 2 episode “What Is Dead May Never Die,” and ultimately appeared in 41 more episodes. At 6’3”, Christie is one of Game of Thrones’ most imposing figures, especially given her character’s reputation as as warrior. Brienne of Tarth plays a pivotal role in Game of Thrones season 8.

On Instagram, Christie shared an emotional message that begins with “THANK YOU.” In the posted black and white image, Christie embraces a man who she identifies in the caption as Game of Thrones assistant director Ciaran [Colton]. She notes that the photo was taken on the last day of goodbyes, and that Colton was the first person she met on the show. Christie states, “He treated me with respect, kindness and great humor every single day.” In addition, Christie comments about her experience portraying Brienne of Tarth, and how much she learned in the process, noting that the character “redefined the way I look at the world, women and particular myself." On the HBO series, Brienne of Tarth earns the respect of the series’ most powerful figures, which culminates in a powerful moment in the Game of Thrones season 8 episode “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” In the Instagram post, Christie goes on to discuss how much she’ll miss working with the Game of Thrones cast and crew, and that she’s “so very grateful” for the opportunity and all the support that fans have expressed over the years. The actress ends the post with a sword emoji, along with a black heart emoji. Check out Christie’s full Instagram message below.

Unsurprisingly, the Game of Thrones season 8 finale has polarized fans and critics alike. Actress Sophie Turner has slammed critics for being disrespectful, and Isaac Hempstead-Wright reportedly believed that his character’s ending was a joke in a fake script. Now that Game of Thrones has ended, cast members are reflecting on their experiences, and thus providing some insight into the process as a whole.

While Game of Thrones has been rightfully criticized for its treatment of female characters, Christie’s Brienne of Tarth has proven to be one of Game of Thrones most inspirational figures, which makes the actress’ words on Instagram all the more impactful and affecting. Moving forward, hopefully Christie will be part of HBO’s future, whether it involves Westeros or an entirely different realm.
