The creators of Halo Infinite’s new game engine SlipSpace says its production was vitally important for the future of the Halo franchise. It’s been nearly five years since the last main entry in the Halo series, Halo 5: Guardians, was released, but the continued success of re-released titles like Halo Reach and Halo: The Master Chief Collection has kept the franchise fresh in player’s minds.

With Halo reaching the top of Steam’s player charts only a few months ago, both new and long-time fans are surely eagerly awaiting the newest entry in the Halo series, Halo Infinite. A new game isn’t the only thing players have to look forward to, either, as Showtime’s Halo TV show has already entered production, and PC beta testing for Halo: Combat Evolved is planned to start later this month. Now, thanks to a new video released by developer 343 Industries, players have an even better idea about where the future of the Halo series is heading.

In a recent YouTube video posted to Halo’s official account, 343 Industries talks about how they had a need to create a brand-new game engine which would be powerful enough for next generation development, “but also more nimble, so the creatives and engineers are able to work more easily and iterate faster.” The company speaks of a need to honor the franchise’s history while also finding a way to make Halo popular for years to come, including giving the content creators the best tools possible to make new experiences. With Halo Infinite’s new SlipSpace engine, the developers state this technical groundwork “is vital to the future of Halo.” Interested players can check out the video for themselves below:

The video goes on to talk about how important the Halo community is to 343 Industries, and describes how they want to create an open dialog with players and be more communicative in the future. This is part of the reason the company has developed the Halo Insider program, which Pierre Hintze, Head of Publishing for 343 Industries, says is meant to help “incorporate the feedback of our fans into the day-to-day development cycles,” and has been particularly helpful in the development of Halo: Reach.

As another entry in one of the most iconic first-person shooter franchises of all time, Halo Infinite is unsurprisingly also one of the most anticipated video games of 2020, and, given the length of time it’s been since a main entry in the series, will likely introduce an entire new generation of fans to Master Chief, the Covenant, and all other sorts of Halo lore. If the above video is any indication, however, Halo Infinite is only the first step in what 343 Industries is hoping to be another long period of success for the classic console-selling shooter.
