Harley Quinn prepares for Christmas in Warner Bros.’ new Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) promo. February 7th, 2020 sees DC return following their hugely successful blockbuster Joker. Birds of Prey will be the first DCEU film directed by a woman of color, Cathy Yan, and it will also serve as an introductory film for a new cast of characters such as Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez). In addition to the new female characters, Yan’s film will see Ewan McGregor portray Roman Sionis/Black Mask. DC villain Black Mask was described by producer Sue Kroll as “unexpected and surprising.”

Birds of Prey also marks the highly anticipated return of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Robbie was arguably the real highlight of Suicide Squad, and now with Joker out of the equation and the film as a whole moving away from anything Suicide Squad related, audiences will get to see a more “personal” side of Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Although the Birds of Prey trailer, and the teaser where she moves to the “the back,” is narrated by the Quinn character, it has been said repeatedly in various interviews with the cast and crew that this isn’t a Harley Quinn movie. However, Warner Bros.’ new Christmas promo once again has Harley Quinn front and center.

On the official Warner Bros. UK Twitter, a brand new 10-second promo was released highlighting Birds of  Prey’s funny and irreverent side as it shows Harley Quinn preparing for Christmas in her unique fashion. Essentially, the promo is snippets from the full trailer, showing the characters “Christmas Prep,” which includes “Pre-Game” drinks accompanied by the shot of Quinn drinking at a bar, Quinn running with a shopping cart gathering “Supplies,” and also ending with the important message of “Have A Blast,” a message that is followed by Quinn handing a bomb to young Cassandra Cain, who throws it out, blowing up another car in the process.

This promo is identical to the one the Birds of Prey Twitter put out for Thanksgiving, with the only difference being that it now says “Christmas Prep” as opposed to “Thanksgiving Prep” at the beginning of the promo. It’s a festive reminder of Robbie’s return, as the popular DC character, during a time when the actor has been busy with her new release, Bombshell.

Studios will often attempt to capitalize on the holidays to promote their upcoming releases, and Warner Bros.’ Birds of Prey is no exception. The predictions for Birds of Prey see it grossing between $40-$60 million for its opening weekend, which could be the lowest three-day debut for a DCEU film - though it should be noted Birds of Prey is the first R-rated DCEU movie. Warner Bros. is likely hoping to build more momentum with their continued Harley Quinn dominated marketing campaign to ensure the film can exceed expectations and make this R-rated DCEU movie a huge success.
