Birds of Prey reveals that Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn voted for current Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. Warner Bros.’ latest DC offering brings the fan-favorite character from David Ayer’s Suicide Squad back to the big screen. Finally out of prison, Harley roams around Gotham freely causing chaos. However, when she and the Joker broke up, all her past wrongdoings against other dangerous people in the city start to catch up with her. One of the names on her long list of enemies is Ewan McGregor’s Roman Sionis/Black Mask, who has a list of grievances against Harley.

This leads to Harley teaming up with an new all-female squad that includes Huntress/Helena Bertinelli (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Dinah Laurel Lance/Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bett), Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), and Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco). Brought together by varying circumstances, their one common goal is defeat Sionis and his army of goons, who are going after each and every one of them. The women all get tangled up with Black Mask’s hunt for a diamond which holds the key to the Bertinelli fortune. However, Harley has a few more personal transgressions against Black Mask - and apparently, that includes her support for Bernie.

Every time Harley is faced with people whom she wronged, Birds of Prey offers a handy recap of what she did to that particular person. Once Sionis and his men got their hands on her, the film lists a string of her personal wrongdoings against the crime lord - and that apparently includes voting for Bernie Sanders. According to director Cathy Yan, that detail came from writer Christina Hodson. The idea wasn’t meant to reflect their own political leanings, but was instead used for comic relief. They wanted to throw in as many absurd reasons that Black Mask might detest Harley, and it just so happen that voting for Sanders was one of the things they came up with.

While it’s nothing but a gag and DC is known for its fictional settings (unlike Marvel which uses real-world locations), Black Mask getting mad at anyone who voted for Sanders does make sense. Aside from the fact that’s Roman is a mob leader who’s known for fear-mongering, not to mention straight-up murdering people, Bernie Sanders is known for his policies of cracking down of the rich - especially those at the very top who are able to continue feeding their greed.

As revealed in Birds of Prey, Sionis comes from wealth - and while he’s been disowned by his family, he still has the financial resources to buy his way through Gotham. He also wants to expand his criminal monopoly of the system, which is why he is hell bent in pocketing the Bertinelli fortune. While a lot of the current presidential candidates are pushing for equality in the country, no one is as vocal and consistent as Sanders regarding this. And considering the growing base that he has, his chances of accomplishing his goal may actually be a possibility if he wins the Democratic nomination and eventually the general election.

As for Harley, given what Birds of Prey told us about his upbringing prior to meeting the Joker, she lived a miserable life. Her irresponsible dad, after several failed attempts to sell her, ended up dumping her in an orphanage run by nuns. Despite her inherently naughty nature, she was able to put herself through school - which may well have left her with crippling student debt. Sanders has been talking about canceling all student debt as part of his platform, which is one of the reasons why he’s popular among young voters. Perhaps like many who’s saddled by student debts, Harley just also wants hers cancelled. Also, given the amount of trouble that Harley gets into, she could probably do with reliable Medicaid.
