When Harry and Ginny started dating and became a couple in Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince, many fans were excited about this development, while others were not.

While the relationship wasn’t built up that much in previous books, at least not from Harry’s perspective, there were things about this pairing that made a lot of sense. On the other hand, many people felt like the relationship with Harry wasn’t built up enough and that it didn’t do Ginny as a character enough justice.

Here are the five reasons why Ginny should have been with Dean and five why Harry was the right choice.

DEAN: HARRY DIDN’T REALLY NOTICE GINNY FOR A LONG TIME

While Ginny had a crush on Harry pretty much from the start and was rather awkward about it, Harry didn’t really notice her at all. While this doesn’t mean they couldn’t ever be a couple or that feelings can’t change, it does make their relationship a little one-sided.

There were a lot of people that did notice Ginny and find her attractive and worth dating, and Dean was one of them. While Harry might have finally noticed her, it definitely took him a long time to get there.

HARRY: THEY HAD A LOT OF THINGS IN COMMON

One thing that makes a relationship work over the long term is having shared interests and things in common. In this way, Harry and Ginny do make a good match.

As Harry has spent a lot of his time growing up around the Weasleys, they know a lot about each other. Plus, they both are into similar hobbies such as Quidditch, and they both have rather strong personalities. Because of this, they would likely be able to talk about a lot of things and enjoy each other’s company.

DEAN: SHE WOULD ALWAYS BE IN HARRY’S SHADOW

Dating the Chosen One definitely wouldn’t always be easy. While it’s not Harry’s fault, the fact is that being with him would always cast you in his shadow. Because of the fact that he defeated Voldemort, he’s always going to be a hero.

While Ginny is great in her own right and quite talented at her Quidditch career, none of her accomplishments would ever stack up to Harry’s. In this way, being with Dean would be more of an even match for her.

HARRY: GINNY LIKED HARRY FOR A LONG TIME

While your childhood crush isn’t always the person you should end up with, it does make for a rather sweet fictional story. Ginny always noticed Harry and was interested in him, and she also liked him for who he was.

While others only really knew Harry as this celebrity figure, Ginny got to know Harry for his real self over the years. So, in this way, she would make a good match for Harry, and they would be able to get to know each other on a deeper level.

DEAN: HARRY LEFT GINNY BEHIND MANY TIMES

While Ginny is definitely a talented witch from the Harry Potter series, she’s often overshadowed. Harry is always doing everything with Ron and Hermione, and it never really made much sense why Ginny couldn’t go with them to find the Horcruxes.

She gets put into this love interest role who is waiting for the hero to return, and this does her a disservice. If she was with Dean, she would have been able to let her talents and abilities shine through more, and she wouldn’t always be left behind while Harry went on his adventures.

HARRY: GINNY AND HARRY GOT TO KNOW EACH OTHER AS FRIENDS

Another thing that’s the foundation of most great romantic relationships is friendship. Romance can’t always be present, so having that solid start of friendship makes everything easier.

Ginny and Harry actually became pretty good friends before they started dating. While Ginny used to be rather shy around him, in their later years at Hogwarts, they got along well and got to know each other. This makes for a good start to a long-lasting relationship.

DEAN: SHE COULD HAVE MORE INDEPENDENCE

In many ways, Ginny seems like quite a fierce character. She grew up in a big family with brothers who had strong personalities. As such, she had to grow into herself and her confidence and forge a strong identity.

With Dean, she could have been more of her own person. Because with Harry, she’s not only often be in his shadow but also in the shadow of Hermione and Ron. It would be hard to compete with the trio and all of the things they had been through together over the years.

HARRY: THEY GOT ALONG WELL

While Dean might have been a good choice in some ways, they seemed to argue quite often in the books. There also seemed to be some jealousy in that relationship, and they didn’t always seem to get along smoothly.

With Harry, on the other hand, things seemed to be going rather well. When they were dating and together, they seemed to get along and didn’t have problems with fighting or petty issues.

DEAN: HARRY DIDN’T SEEM TO APPRECIATE GINNY ENOUGH

Given the fact that Harry had a lot on his mind during his time at Hogwarts, it can somewhat be forgiven that he wasn’t always focused on Ginny. However, in a relationship, it’s important to be on equal footing.

So, the fact he was somewhat oblivious to her and how awesome she was isn’t a great sign. Hopefully, after Voldemort was defeated and they got older, Harry was able to appreciate her more.

HARRY: HAVING HARRY JOIN THE WEASLEY FAMILY IS QUITE WONDERFUL

There is definitely something appealing in a narrative sense about having Harry end up with Ginny.

Seeing as how he was already so close to the Weasley family, it’s a nice thing that he ends up becoming an official member of their family through marriage. This would make for quite a tight-knit family and that’s something Harry and Ginny would both enjoy.
