Tom Felton thinks Harry Potter will be rebooted someday, wants to play Lucius. The Harry Potter film star was a definite highlight as Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter’s Hogwarts nemesis, in the hugely successful eight-film franchise.
As son of Lucius Malfoy – the notorious Death Eater and dedicated servant to Lord Voldemort – Felton took on a character that many despised throughout J.K. Rowling’s seven Harry Potter novels. At the same time, however, his inclusion in the series was essential and Felton’s portrayal did exactly what the character was best at – namely getting under people’s skin in a very smug and arrogant manner. But as the Potterverse continues to expand and change, some are calling for the film series to be rebooted. This comes at time when Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts franchise is in the process of getting a third film off the ground, and the stage production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (though not written by Rowling), continues to draw crowds around the world.
As the Potterverse continues its growth, Comic Book reports that Felton has spoken about the possibility of the Potter franchise being rebooted. Saying that “he’s sure” the franchise will be back in another 20 years or so, Felton revealed that he would definitely like to be part of a reboot. At 32-years-of-age, Felton may no longer be suited to play Draco, but that’s not where his interests lay, anyway. Instead, he says that in another 15 years he’d be ready to play Draco’s wicked father, Lucius. Said Felton:
For those keeping track of such things, Lucius Malfoy was played by Jason Isaacs in the original Potter films and did a tremendous job. There’s no doubt that Felton has the acting chops to pull off such a demanding role, but the entire concept rests strictly on conjecture at this point. What’s more, Felton isn’t the only former Potter franchise star to bank on the entire series being rebooted in the future. Even Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, admitted that it’s likely to be a possibility at some point. But while reboots may be all the rage in Hollywood right now, exactly what the state of Hollywood will be in 15 or 20 years from now is hard to predict. What this means is that film trends come and go very quickly. Just over a decade ago, for example, the odds of every major Hollywood release being screened in 3D was very high. Today the concept is generally quite rare, at best.
“I don’t think Jo [Rowling] would want her films, her books rather and her films, to be remade anytime soon, but I’m sure in 20 years when they’ve got 4D, scratch-and-sniff cinemas, or whatever, then they’ll want to do it all over again. My hope is that when they do it I’ll be old enough to play Lucius. Give it another 15 years and I’ll come back and play Lucius. I would do it in a heartbeat.”
This isn’t to say that a Harry Potter reboot isn’t going to happen or that some fans don’t want it very much. In all honesty, there’s probably a great chance of Warner Bros. taking on the franchise once again. However, the series remains J.K. Rowling’s baby, so to speak, and what could be more likely than a reboot is the eventual sale of the franchise, just as George Lucas did with Star Wars. If that should ever occur, fans can bet that anything and everything from a reboot to an entirely new Harry Potter franchise will materialize in no time.
