After letting us know last month that it was getting ready to release a toolkit to let developers easily bring their Chrome web apps to iOS and Android, today Google released a developer preview of the tool. In its blog post, Google explains the tool is based on open-source framework Apache Cordova, which allows devs to build native apps for iOS and Android using CSS, HTML, and Javascript. It’s also making a lot of its own core Chrome APIs available to developers through the preview....

According to IBM’s annual X-Force Threat Intelligence Index, based on security incidents and threat data gathered over 2021, businesses are now being “imprisoned” by the active exploitation of vulnerabilities and the deployment of ransomware. The tech giant’s researchers say that phishing remains the most common attack vector for cyberattacks but there has also been a 33% increase in the use of vulnerabilities against unpatched systems. Giphy for iOS has received a new update today adding a keyboard for universal iOS GIF searching and integration with Apple’s TrueDepth camera system, offering users the ability to create custom stickers with their face. Version 3.4 adds universal keyboard support to devices running iOS 12 or later. Notably, iOS 12 adoption grew to over 70% this month. Google Maps for iPhone and iPad has received an update to version 4.4.0 bringing a new full-screen map view, improved transit directions and voice search, and the ability to filter search results for Zagat-reviewed restaurants. Google notes that the new full-screen mode can be activated by “tapping an empty spot on the map,” while improved voice search brings the ability to “type, or tap the mic and say, “directions to” a place for faster results....

Google’s attempt to build an iTunes-killer is gaining momentum with the search giant now speaking to publishing companies after successful discussions with record labels. Today Google just released a new update for the built-in navigation app for Android phones and tablets, and it helps you avoid traffic jams. The Navigation app does this by implementing real-time and historical traffic data then adjusting your directions to give you the fastest route possible. The motion GT Advanced filed earlier for a closed hearing was to seek court permission to close its sapphire manufacturing plant, reports Re/code. As we noted earlier, the reason for the company’s failure appears to be that it was unable to meet Apple’s requirements for sapphire displays for the iPhone 6, though it remains unclear whether this was a quality issue or an inability to supply the volumes needed. Sapphire crystal maker GT Advanced Technologies, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this week, has asked the court’s permission to “wind down” operations at its manufacturing plant, less than a year after announcing a high-profile deal to supply the material to Apple....
