Nanoleaf, makers of popular HomeKit-compatible ambient lighting panels, made two significant announcements at this year’s CES in Las Vegas. Both a 12-sided, customizable remote control and brand new square lighting panels debuted on the show floor. We stopped by Nanoleaf’s booth for a full hands-on demonstration. Just like Nanoleaf’s triangular panels, the company’s square panels can be customized and controlled through the use of Apple’s Home app for iOS. Cedric Diggory and Harry Potter were both students at Hogwarts, seekers on their respective Hogwarts House Quidditch teams, and the eventual Champions representing Hogwarts in the Triwizard Tournament. The two did not go out of their way to interact, but when they did, they were friendly toward each other, and they did help each other out during the Tournament. Bloomberg reported this morning that a German data regulator is seeking to question Apple over its use of the Carrier IQ mobile tracking software in iPhones: Back in the United States, Senator Al Franken is urging Carrier IQ and Sprint to detail how specifically the software works and what data it transmits, demanding that Carrier IQ explain themselves by December 14. Phone vendors and platform providers such as Google are attempting to distance themselves from Carrier IQ, arguing carriers deploy the software on handsets and mine data....

Apple officially confirmed its November 10 event yesterday, where it’s expected to announce new Apple Silicon Macs. Ahead of that event, prolific designer AR7 has released wallpapers for the iPhone inspired by Apple’s “One more thing” event artwork. Apple’s invitation for the November 10 event is bright and colorful, and one of the best-looking invites we’ve seen from Apple recently. The wallpapers from AR7 play on the colorful design, and there are two different versions with the Apple logo and even a gradient version without the Apple logo....

When Apple refused to compromise iOS security last year and unlock the iPhone 5c belonging to the San Bernardino shooter, the FBI turned to an Israeli mobile forensics firm called Cellebrite to find a way in to the encrypted iPhone. Now Motherboard reports that a hacker has released files allegedly from Cellebrite that demonstrate how cracking tools can’t be kept private. Motherboard says Cellebrite had 900GB of data stolen in last month which suggested the firm sold security cracking tools to countries including Russia, Turkey, and the UAE....

The Triwizard Tournament was a huge part of Harry Potter’s school experience - for the magic of the competition itself, but also because it was at the end of this event that Voldemort truly returned. Many Potterheads have a bit of an obsession with the inner-workings of the Death Eaters, the villainous organization from the Harry Potter series. We want to know all there is to know about these evil-doers, but this may have to do with the fact that many fans seem to gravitate toward the baddies in general. Some of the relationships in the Harry Potter universe just don’t make sense. Cho and Harry is definitely one of them. Romance doesn’t seem to be J.K. Rowling’s forte.
